After a hard and stressful day in the real world we all need a good laugh. Get your stomach ready because I will recommend the best comedy anime that will make you cry with laughter.
Next we’ll start with a short list of those anime that focus more on humor than any other, of course once in a while you might be moved deep down in your kokoro.
In this article we’ll cover:
Let’s start with a classic that we old-timers know well. It focuses on the day to day lives of our four lovable protagonists; Konata, the otaku and slacker of the group skilled in the art of studying the night before an exam.
Kagami, the responsible and mature one, the one who deep down loves them all but never admits it and is a bit angry, you can sum her up as the tsundere.
Tsukasa, Kagami’s twin sister and one of those who provides the “moe”. Miyoki, the smartest and best “provided” of the team, she knows all kinds of facts and loves to study. In each episode you will see the particular life of these charismatic girls.
Sakamoto desu ga
Very different from the previous post, we focus on a character whose genius stands out with whatever he does.
He’s the best student, he’s the most handsome, athletic, the girls love him, the bullies love him more, even when he burped at karaoke he looked cool. Sakamoto is the most amazing guy you could ever meet in your disgusting life.
Jingai-san no Yome
This is the most topical of the top and probably the “weirdest” but also, in a twisted way, “cute in its own way”. Our protagonist Tomari, a normal 16 year old high school boy, who, by life’s chance, was chosen to become the wife of a big fluffy furry creature named Kanenogi.
Now, the funny thing is not the fact that he was made to marry a non-human living being, but how much fun they have together to the point of making you feel a bitter feeling very similar to envy.
Another very funny thing is that this anime can generate a serious debate as to whether its genre is yaoi or furry.
It’s hard for you not to have heard of it, as it’s among the fan favorites.
It’s about Umaru, a girl who may seem cute, responsible and good at school, but behind closed doors she turns into a lazy, game-addicted otaku who relies heavily on her older brother.
Well you can relate to this girl when it comes to being lazy.
Tomoko is a beautiful girl, popular and loved by everyone who loves going to school and spending time with her many friends… or so our dear girl would like to think.
The reality is that she’s super anti-social and withdrawn, but hey you have to hand it to her incredible stubbornness, as throughout the series you’ll see her try hard with her unsuccessful attempts to be the most popular and get a boyfriend.
You could see it as a younger sibling to Gintama. It’s about a particular trio who form a club to help people, just like their sempai Gintama, it has comical moments and overly funny characters that will make your day until your stomach hurts from laughing so much.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
What could you like more than a maid? A super maid dragon of course! Kobayashi is an unfriendly woman who after a drunken night out, which she doesn’t remember anything about, makes a promise and takes in a dragon as a maid in her apartment named Toru.
Aside from the fact that it’s hilarious, because Toru otherwise sucks at maid duties, it’s adorable to see how these two’s relationship grows throughout each episode.
Gabriel Drop Out
And from dragons we move on to angels. We are placed with Gabriel Tenma, a nice angel with a fervent desire to help the human race.
That’s why she graduated as the best in her academy, but by things of life, after arriving on earth and being placed in an apartment.
Gabriel starts playing one game, then another, and another… by the time she realizes she can’t stop playing online games and spends all her money on them. Angel Gabriel Tenma, became a video game addict and a total slob.
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!
It’s hard not to find this anime in every top about comedy. Kasuma Sato, our protagonist is a hikikomori who comes out of his exile from society to go shopping for a game, but during his journey he encounters a beautiful young woman who was about to be run over by a rampaging truck Oh no! Only he can save her!
In a brave heroic act he pushes her and receives the full blow of the vehicle, his death was a painful and courageous loss that would last for years to come….
Unfortunately the reality was very different from his beautiful intention, for starters the rampaging truck was a slow tractor that only waved at the young woman who was not in danger and ended up violently pushed just because.
But the worst thing was that he did not die from being run over, but from the fright of thinking that he was, it was so pathetic that the doctors laughed at him, his family laughed at him, and the goddess herself, who offered him another chance, laughed at him.
Now Sato lives a new life, full of adventures and comical situations that will make you laugh your head off.
I know I’ve already put gintama in other tops but not naming it in comedy would be an outrage! Its humor and “wtf” moments are unique, that’s without naming the pile of characters that do their thing throughout the episodes.
What I love most about this anime, aside from its good dose of action and fights, are its wacky references or the fact that the main character bullies his own manga.
“A long, long time ago, in a certain place. There existed a king who was evil, cruel, wretched, pedantic, and without any respect or love for his fellow man…” Doesn’t that kind of introduction appeal to you?
Beelzebub comes dealing with criminals whose protagonist is the most dangerous of them all and, for absurd reasons, ends up taking care of a baby.
Watching Oga deal with a baby as he fights the various increasingly strong opponents that come his way is about as fun and epic as it gets.
Katekyo hitman reborn
And from baby gangsters to baby killers. Tsuna is a poor kid who is nicknamed “useless” at school, lousy at sports, at exams, and with girls.
He is resigned to living a pitiful life, until one day a little suit-wearing infant named Reborn arrives, who is actually a powerful assassin who will become his tutor and turn Tsuna into the perfect Tenth boss of the most powerful mafia family in existence.
Besides seeing poor Tsuna being rudely trained and taking absurd tests for his hopeless fate, this anime also features incredible doses of action and fighting, with iconic characters you’ll fall in love with.
Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan
Have you ever imagined how cool it would be to have telekinetic powers? Well our protagonist, Kusuo Saiki, comes to tell you that it’s not pretty at all and on the contrary it’s quite troublesome.
Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan tells us in a very unusual way the story of a young man struggling to be normal even when he’s not normal at all, with characters around him who are just as or even weirder than him and some of the funniest moments.
A school comedy anime like few there have been, Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei is about a teacher with the worst outlook on life as you can imagine, and he gets to teach a class just as strange, if not stranger, than he is.
From a girl addicted to the cell phone, a hikimori, another terribly optimistic among many other students who will be responsible for turning their daily lives into a nonsense full of craziness.
Detroit Metal City
This peculiar anime has not been seen by everyone, even though it has a kind of black humor combined with a criticism of the current music industry.
The story tells us how Soichi Negishi, a sensitive boy who dreams of becoming the best pop singer but ended up being the lead vocalist and leader of a very promising noisy metal music band.
Besides making us laugh at the way the protagonist has a debate with himself between following his dreams or fulfilling the expectations of his strange fans, the anime in a very subtle way makes us reflect on the dark ways in which stars become famous.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Speaking of poking fun at famous subjects, in Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun you’ll find all sorts of jokes and subtle jokes at shojo clichés.
We meet the story of Sakura, who is madly in love with her classmate Umetarou Nozaki.
One day she plucks up the courage and confesses to the boy, but because of a bad choice of words she is misunderstood and Nozaki gives her his autograph thinking she is a fan, when she tries to explain herself he invites her to his house and there she discovers that he is a famous romance novelist.
The series will show you a moment of absurd situations that refers to romance.
Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!
Nozaki-kun focuses on a peculiar art club where the least of its entertainments is painting.
Subaru Uchimaki is a boy talented at drawing faces and who only wants to paint girls in 2D, Colette the rich girl who does everything but make art, and Mizuki Usamil, the only one who really wants to paint but that becomes an odyssey with the companions that is spent.
Besides being a very enjoyable and fun anime to watch, you end up having a certain fondness for the characters who, being strange to a fault, are all charismatic and funny.
